I hate when people shop trends, instead of what looks good on their body. Friends tell me I look good in everything, but the truth is that I know what looks good on my body and what doesn’t.  I know to stay away from midi skirts, boyfriend jeans, and anything that has too much fabric because it swallows me up.  Women need to know what looks good on their shape.  I see so many woman walking around in clothes that are stylish, but are so unflattering on their body.   Women should know that you can’t just walk into a store and purchase what looks good on the mannequin or what the sales woman tells you everyone is buying now.  I never shop for my clients based on trends, or based on what looks good on me. Dress for your shape and size and not a trend. Check out these different body shapes below and see what styles you should be shopping for.

Apple Shape (Triangle downwards) This is generally described as “top-heavy”.

Suggested Look: I chose this red dress because it has great coverage on top and I like the black detail which I think gives a slimming affect.  The waist cinches in and the bottom ruffle draws the eye down.  The black dress is another great option.  With the sheer sleeve it still shows skin and has coverage at the same time and loose around the middle but gathers at the middle creating a waist.  And the the uneven hem is very flattering for the legs.

Pear Shape: Hips are wider than your shoulders.

Suggested look: The key is to draw the attention to the top of your body and keep bottoms on the darker and more basic side.   Avoid anything bulky on top so that you accentuate your sleek more petite upper half. This red lace dress with delicate spaghetti straps and higher waist is a great way to hide the lower part of the body.

And this black dress, although much more fitted, brings your eye to the top of the dress due to the simple bottom and more interesting top.

Rectangle Shape: Basically no significant size difference from the the shoulders, waist and hips.

Suggested look: Something that creates a waist to give the illusion of more shape. The light dress with its gathered fabric by the chest and around the hips creates the illusion of curves and a more voluptuous silhouette.  It is more fitted by the waist to bring everything in.  The red dress also creates the illusion of a waist because of the wide off the shoulder top and the flare pleated bottom.

Hourglass (Triangles opposing, facing inwards): This shape is curvy on the bottom and top with a small waist.

Suggested look: Anything that brings attention to the waist.  Embrace the shape and do not wear anything that hides it. Thats why I chose this white dress with corset middle which brings attention waist. I also love this form hugging black dress with a wide scoop neck.  Both dresses show off that beautiful hour glass shape, without being revealing.

Keep in mind these four shapes are only a general guide.  No woman’s body is exactly the same so it is really is important to know your body and build your style from there.

Happy Shopping!
