The One Habit That Is Getting In The Way Of Your Weight Loss.

You. Are. Not. Drinking. Enough. Water.

Staying adequately hydrated ensures that your metabolism is running at it’s maximum, meaning you are burning the most amount of calories for yourself as possible, whether you are sitting at your desk, digesting your food, or working your butt off in that spin class.

Also, our bodies often times mistake hunger for thirst, so you’ll end up reaching for more food (and calories), when really what you need is water. If you make sure you are always well hydrated, then you can eliminate unnecessary snacking and reach your health goals quicker!

So, drops the pounds quicker by drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day (more if you work out). Cold, hot, or room temp all work. And feel free to add in a slice of lemon, cucumber, or orange for a bit of flavor if you need it. Or try unsweetened green tea, that counts too!

The Nutrients You Need To Have The Hair You Want.

When it comes to amazing, healthy, strong, shiny hair, it is really all about that B family! B vitamins are the key to luscious locks for sure, so here’s what you need to know.

There are a bunch of different B vitamins, like niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid, B6 and B12 and it is key to make sure to eat all of them, because they work together to stimulate hair follicles to grow healthy hair. Research has shown that B vitamins play a role in a reducing hair loss and decreasing grey hair growth.   Aim to get your B vitamins from foods, instead of supplements, by eating more: quinoa, oatmeal, brown rice, strawberries, dark leafy greens, chicken, and salmon.

Biotin is another B vitamin, but it gets special attention for its role in stimulating new cells and re-growing lost hair. Again, you want to make sure you are getting this from your diet, instead of supplementation alone, so make sure to increase your intake of nuts, eggs, whole grains, swiss chard, and halibut.

Update Your Spring Wardrobe With Denim

Here we are in Spring and, for us New Yorkers, it still feels like Winter.  Actually it feels colder than Winter because its suppose to be spring. Nevertheless Spring weather should be here any day now and hopefully when it arrives, it will be here to stay.  So lets make sure our wardrobe is prepared.  Each season I update my wardrobe with a few current trends. When I think Spring clothes, I think layers;  Jackets, light sweaters, jeans, and shoes with no socks.   This year denim is so hot and with so many different hems, widths and washes, that its an easy way to update your look for Spring.  The best part is that since there is so much to choose from,  you can choose the style that best fits your body.  I love all the new denim trends, the wide leg boot cut, the flare, the crop, and the jagged short hem.  I also love denim because you can wear it so often.   As a petite 5’4 girl, I’ll stick with a skinny or straight leg with a raw hem. Go check out the different denims and see how with a few new pairs of jeans can update your look for Spring!

4 Foods for Healthier Skin

Foods work from the inside out in a lot of different ways and here are 4 foods that particular target your skin to promote a healthy, dewy, fresh faced look.

  1. Salmon. Salmon is a healthy diet staple because it is a great source of lean protein and heart healthy fats. We have all heard this before. But did you know that those same heart healthy fats (omega-3 fatty acids) also work wonders for keeping your skin glowing and healthy? Omega-3’s work as an anti-inflammatory, so they reduce puffiness and redness that can creep up under your eyes and on your cheeks. Grilled, baked, broiled, or sashimi style, aim to get in some salmon at least 1-2 times a week.

  1. Eggs. Another staple for an all around healthy diet, but eggs are particular important for your skin thanks to their zinc! Zinc helps to control oil content in the skin, which will minimize breakouts. Zinc is also essential in forming that much needed collagen. Have them for breakfast or in your lunchtime salad.

  1. Bone broth. Is a good source of collagen, which is the stuff that keeps your skin plump, dewy and wrinkle free. Over time our skin naturally loses collagen, so adding in foods that can replenish it is a great way to stay looking young. Try it with dinner or as an afternoon snack.

  1. Green Tea. Is high in antioxidants, which fight off free radicals in the body. Free radicals cause premature signs of aging (i.e. wrinkles) and other types of cell damage. Green tea is also very hydrating (thanks H20!) which prevents dryness and flakiness. Aim for 2 cups a day (iced or hot) and then 8 glasses of straight up water.

Eye Am Soooo Puffy!

Puffy eyes are SUCH a hard area to combat. Not only are they extremely aging, but there is very little you can permanently do to prevent or cure them, short of surgery that is. Lots of our members have been suffering with this recently. Here are their top tips:

  1. There are a whole ream of serums and eye creams claiming to “de-puff”. Member’s top 5: Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Eye Serum, Darphin Dark Circles and De-puffing Eye Serum, Origins GinZing (this can be used as eye cream, but also acts as an excellent primer for your under eye concealer, the results are immediate and long lasting!

  1. Eye masks are a go to for many a celebrity before a walk on the red carpet, and are great for those days when the products just aren’t enough. Our members love Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask, Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Mask and Intraceuticals Eye Masks.
  2. For puffiness thats as a result of bad sinus’, invest in a neti pot and literally flush it out!

Fun Fact

Stop the hot showers, and start with the cold spoons! Confused? Me too. One member advised holding cold spoons over your eyes for a few minutes, because of course we all have spoons in our freezer (lol). You could otherwise invest in a hot/cold eye mask from your local drugstore and I promise you will get the same results!

Spring Shoe Closet Essentials

It may only be a tease, but with 60 degree temperatures in March it feels like Spring is only a few weeks away, which means it’s time to start transitioning out of those shearling boots to something much lighter.   The perfect Spring shoe has just the right amount of skin exposed.  Any type of mule, ballet flat, espadrilles or a light colored sneaker (sans socks) works best.  I’ve done some research and shopped around to come up with my personal favorite everyday shoes for this season.  Happy Shopping!

The Beautyhood – Eye For An Eye

Eye for an Eye

Been on mommy duty for the past few weeks and cannot see the wood for the trees? Yea me too. Can’t tell you how exciting it is to share a little roundup of all the fabulousness we have recently encountered over at The Beautyhood:

  1. Best eye liners that don’t run, and leave you looking like a panda at the end of the day? Members love Bobbi Brown eyeliner in a jar, Urban decay 24/7 waterline eye pencil and Make Up Forever Aqua XL liner.
  2. What about best Mascaras that also stay the hell put? Member favorites are, Colossal Cat Eye Black waterproof mascara by Maybelline, and any tubular mascaras namely Trish McEvoy’s Lash Curling Mascara!
  3. Thinning Eyebrows? What about Microblading? We had quite the discussion around this topic. To surmise;
    1. Its a dramatic look, research the technician and the kind of look you are going for. Our resident eyebrow expert Angela Marinescu from Exhale Spa, recommends brow tinting first, to see how comfortable darker brows feel. She also mentioned that shaping and trimming the brows regularly, will help to activate long term growth.
    2. Knowledge is power here and Microblading does fade a lot in the first few weeks after treatment, and truly requires more than one treatment to get optimal results. Its also pricey! So forewarned is forearmed 🙂

Fun Fact

Ironing is good for the soul, the windows to the soul…you know, your eyes?! Namely the puffy bags under your under eyes. I’m talking about Puff Off by Benefit, fun and fab!!

How Much Fish Should You Really Be Eating?

Fish

How Much Fish Should You Really Be Eating?

Fish is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are nutrients with a lot of benefits like, reduced depression, lower risk of heart disease, and improved cognition. Plus fish are a lean source of protein helping to build strong muscles, healthy bones, and help to maintain a healthy weight.

Whether wild, canned or farm-raised, you should aim to work in about 12 ounces per week into your diet (that is about 2-3 entrées’ worth). Salmon, tuna, shrimp, and cod are great place to start! The fish you want to avoid are shark, king mackerel, tilefish, and swordfish from the Gulf of Mexico, as they contain high levels of mercury and other pollutants.

Recap Of The Best Skin Care Advice From The Youth Corridor By Dr Imber

Hi Lovelies

We were privileged to have anti aging experts, The Youth Corridor by Dr Imber, on hand to answer all our member queries about specific non inva-sive treatments, we recorded a super informative FB live video and here is a sampling of what we discussed.

What is micro needling with PRP?
The treatment uses the tiny needles in a MicroPen Elite to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. These microinjuries stimulate collagen and elastin production. Microneeling Improves fine lines and deeper wrinkles, reduces acne scars, evens skin tone, lightens hyperpigmentation and sun spot, reduces appearance of pores, firms and smooths skin texture, heals scars, reduces broken capillaries and spider veins, brings back the glow for fresher, younger-looking skin – Kind of a no brainier right?

….but what IS PRP? – Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, is obtained by draw-ing a small amount of blood from your arm into a sterile tube. This sample is centrifuged to separate your plasma, which is then used for the treat-ment, from your red and white blood cells. Plasma contains high concentration of platelets, stem cells and growth factors. Platelets help your tissue heal and grow new cells. PRP can also be used on the scalp to encourage new hair growth!

What is the one product I should invest in now?
Vitamin C!!!! Dr Imber’s absolute non negotiable is that you must use a Vit-amin C serum on your skin daily. Serum’s containing either ascorbic or L-ascorbic acid as the active ingredient can stimulate collagen production, tighten skin, smooth lines and decrease sun damage. The longer you use it, the better your skin will become! For information on which specific se-rums our member’s recommend, come join The Beautyhood on Facebook and Instagram
