All About Hair! How To Style it, Wash It, And Grow It From The Beautyhood

This week’s round up is all hair, hair, hair. How to style it, how to wash it…and even a couple of tips on how to grow it! Enjoy:

Winter hair go you all dry and brittle? No worries, members recommended VERB hair products, specifically their leave-in conditioner, Loma, and “No Poo” shampoo by Diva (might have to get that one just to entertain me in the shower lol)

Best dry shampoo? Our member’s fave dry shampoo is Gold Lust by Oribe, Moroccan Oil and a new Dry shampoo by Ouai were also mentioned.

If your hair has lost vitality, is thinning, or even falling out (due to stress, childbirth, hormonal changes or, chemo) – There are options open to you. This is a topic that we have covered a lot on The Beautyhood, so I wanted to share the most popular responses.

  • Firstly taking a supplement. Nutrafol – a new hair supplement that blocks the production of cortisol (the stress hormone, that can cause hair loss), it also contains Biotin and lots of other good stuff to help restore your hair to its former glory, slow down the shedding, and in some cases encourage re-growth.

  • The other treatment being talked about a lot is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy. Most plastic surgeons and some medical spas have the capability to perform this. The treatment essentially involves drawing a patient’s blood and drawing out all the enriched cells, and injecting them into the scalp. Think Vampire facial for your hair!

***Surprising Suggestion***

Pesky Flyaways? Lightly spray them with hairspray and pull a tissue across it. Hold the Kleenex on two ends and just pull over freshly sprayed hair and everything lays down.

3 Reasons You Should Start Eating Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds

High in nutrition and low in calorie, chia seeds are a great superfood to add to your diet.

  1. They are a nutrition powerhouse.

Chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which fights inflammation throughout the body and improves your cognition. They are also super high in antioxidants that boost your immunity and prevent premature signs of aging (i.e. wrinkles)

  1. They boost your heart health.

Chia seeds are high in fiber, which works wonders for your heart health. Fiber has a double duty effect by lowering your “bad” cholesterol level(LDL), while increasing your “good” cholesterol (HDL), making them a total rock star at helping to prevent heart disease.

  1. They help keep your weight in check

2 Tablespoons of these guys gives you 5grams of protein, which packs a punch for such a small amount. Their high protein and fiber combination helps keep you feeling feel and satisfied so you don’t overeat or over snack throughout the day.

Add them to your:

  • Avocado toast
  • Greek yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Smoothies
  • Salads
  • Soups
  • Or make your own chia pudding!

How Cleaning Out Your Closet Is Like Shopping Without Spending Money!

I’m always shopping for new clothing to wear. Wearing something new is always more exciting than wearing the same old stuff. Especially at this time of year when your wardrobe feels stale and everything in the stores seems to be resort wear, why not do a little shopping at home in your own closet. This may sound ridiculous, but it’s actually an amazing way to find clothing you forgot you had and loved!

Before you attempt this I recommend purchasing the slim velvet hangers in black. The black color makes everything look sleek and these hangers keep everything on the hanging so nothing slips off. I purchased mine on AmazonBasics Velvet Suit Hangers – 50 Pack.

I usually start with refolding all of the clothes on my shelves.  Most likely you will end up hanging some of those clothes because they are getting wrinkled or just got thrown there in haste.  Once you have your shelves done move on to the hanging clothes. One by one make sure that all your clothes are switched to the black velvet hangers.  This includes replacing all clothing still wrapped in dry cleaning and on wire hangers. As your doing this you will literally be shocked at the clothing you will find right in your own closet that you probably wore over and over in previous seasons and totally forgot about or only wore a few times and couldn’t find it.  Not to mention your closet will be organized and you will actually be able to see things so you don’t always grab the same things just out of convenience.

Check out my closet makeover below to see what a difference visually it makes to do this and I found so many things I totally forgot about that Im now excited to wear.

Would love to see your before and after closet make overs, if you have please send and I’ll post them to motivate others.

A Simple Way To Update Any Outfit

(Fallon Earrings, Henri Bendel Rings, Bracelet)

Accessorizing with Jewelry is always a fun way to update any outfit.  Of course, real diamonds and gold are amazing, but “faux”  jewelry is an inexpensive way to take an outfit from just okay to fabulous!  Fun jewelry is something I suggest to all my clients.  Adding a necklace or bracelet can change a look completely.  The more jewelry you have to work with, the more you can change up your look.  Literally wearing a white t-shirt and jeans with a lace choker is one look and then wearing the same outfit with a great pair of hanging earrings is a completely different one.  Another thing I love about jewelry is that it is such a display of personal style and lets your personality and/or mood shine through.

This fall I purchased Fallon Monarch Leather Wrap Choker.  Fallon Leather and Diamond ChokerWhen I want an edgier look I put this on and love the way it transforms my outfit!  Some of my favorite stores to shop in for faux jewelry are Jennifer Miller, Intermix and Bauble Bar.  They have a mix of high and low priced pieces, are very good quality and always have the latest trends.  And you must check out a new favorite of mine, Dripping In Gems , for one-of-a kind handmade pieces that are so much fun to wear!  So if your anything like me, and by this time of the year totally over your winter wardrobe, go shopping for some faux jewelry for a little outfit pick me up!

More Winter Beauty Tips From The Beautyhood!

Hello Lovelies,

Hope MLK weekend was fun for one and all? Any skiing accidents? Mild concussions? No? Oh well, just me then! I’m TOTALLY fine by the way, I mean my husband keeps calling me crazy, but that’s kind of an everyday occurrence TBH (lol). Here are some highlights from The Beautyhood:

Dry, chapped lips? Members recommended Burts Bees, Burts Bee ChapstickVaseline lip therapy and Trish McAvoy Lip Perfector for the day. At night wet the lips and apply a thick layer of aquaphor.  Drink loads of water…and avoid exfoliating because it can dry the lips more.

The quest for a perfect Mascara always makes for a lively discussion. Better Than Sex by Too Faced was highly recommended (again!!) I actually took the plunge and bought this for myself recently and it seriously does not disappoint, however. Drugstore favorites were L’Oreal Voluminous and Cover Girl Clump Crusher.

Members revealed their best at-home anti-aging techniques: The Amp MD Microroller by Rodan and Fields. The Dermawand, and a microdermabrasion wand both of which are available on Amazon… and as always, good old Retin-A.  Our Surprising Suggestion: Use Bepanthen, as in Swiss Diaper Rash cream,

on your face and neck, to combat really dry winter skin! Loved this!

Is Coffee Healthy Or Not?

There seems to be a lot of back and forth about whether coffee is healthy to drink or not. So before you give up that cup of joe, here’s the deal:

Coffee itself is loaded in beneficial antioxidants that play a big role in fighting cell damage, chronic illnesses and premature aging. While a moderate amount of caffeine has been linked to reduced risk of chronic illnesses and obesity, while boosting your mood, memory, and of course, energy.   So where did the bad reputation come from?

Consuming high levels of caffeine which is 750mg or more daily (about 8 cups) has been linked to bone loss (hi, osteoporosis), heart palpations, and difficulty sleeping. The golden rule when it comes to coffee is to keep it to no more than 3 cups a day, remember a cup = 8 ounces, this will give you about 300 milligrams of caffeine. A good rule of thumb though is to get in that last cup before 3pm, so that it doesn’t interfere with a good night sleep.

Shop This Designer Look For Less

I love spotting designer outfits and putting together the same look for less.  I came across this outfit and fell in love.   I had no idea who any of the designers were, but by using google search and descriptive key words, I was able to piece together this designer outfit. The gorgeous draped wool and cashmere blend cardigan in the photo is by Alexander McQueen,$1,083.  Of course the sweater and jeans are basics and can be found all over, but the boots were definitely designer and expensive.   I would assume either Stuart Weitzman or Yves St Laurent and close to $1500.

My two key pieces, the coat and boots, were going to take some researching to find less expensive pieces that looked similar.  It can be hard to find something equal to a designer made item, because it has to look similar and also be a good quality.  After some shopping, I came across two options that looked very similar to the Alexander McQueen Cardigan.  The first is the Amanda Uprichard Grace Coat for $418.  The other is Harris Wharf London Blanket Coat for $525. These two coats were spot on to the McQueen cardigan in the photo.  The next task boots. Over the knee boots are everywhere, but you need to have a good eye to spot the ones that look as good as the designer ones.   I searched my go to brands who usually make good copies of the designer shoes, Aldo, Schutz, Steve Madden and Sam Edelman.  I decided on the Sam Edelman, with their Over-The-knee microsuede boots on sale for $142.  The boots were the same style, heel height and toe shape and also had the same seams and fabric looked like a true suede.  And finally my outfit is complete, for one third of the price of the designer outfit and I love it!

Happy Shopping!

Shopping with Eye4StyleNYC

I was born a shopper.  Its just something that comes naturally to me and I love.  Sometimes clients hire me to shop for them because they find shopping stressful, but for me its the complete opposite.  Im in a zone when I shop.  Nothing else in the world matters because its my zen.  When I am shopping all the time and finding all these amazing pieces, its so tempting to just always be purchasing too, but I would need another apartment in Manhattan if I was shopping that much.  So even though I love everything I post there are a few items that really stand out as a “must have.”  That being said, I thought it would be fun to share what I’m mixing in and buying each week.   You don’t need to buy a lot, its about shopping smart and buying things that work with things you already have.

Last year I purchased a pair of over the knee charcoal gray suede boots.  I am so happy I didn’t end up spending money on them and went for the Steve Madden copies, for a fraction of the price, because I only wore them maybe three times.  I love them, but when I would try them on the gray just wasn’t working with my outfits.

So this week when I saw these Sam Edelman over the knee black suede boots, that look identical to the $800 designer ones, I couldn’t resist.    Looking forward to putting these boots and sharing some great outfit ideas.
